Welcome

Written by teacher, counselor, and parent, Katharine McCarthy presents a remarkably different approach to the sex talk. She shares her companionable wisdom in straightforward language that helps parents and teachers reorient the sex talk.

With a vast tapestry of experience in teaching, guiding, and having tough conversations, Katharine McCarthy brings fresh air to a subject that has long been a source of anxiety for adults and youth.

“There is pleasure and risk in so many things. We can include both.

We can help our kids become wise and wonderful sexual beings.”

“Who needs a better sex talk? We all do.

We expect young people to form good relationships without admitting the cultural forces shaping all of our behavior. We are more useful when we speak truthfully and listen carefully.”

Educator and Author Kathie McCarthy Shares a New Approach to Conversations about Sexual Relationships

Thursday, October 17, 2024 - 6:30pm

Eagle Harbor Books

How do you, a parent, teacher, or counselor, discuss the complex world of sex and sexual relationships with ease and confidence when much of the information out there is negative? Sex Educator, Kathie McCarthy knows how: you reorient the sex talk. Just how you accomplish that is what Kathie will share with you when she comes to Eagle Harbor Book Co. on October 17th to discuss her new book.“Reorienting the Sex Talk: For Parents and Teachers.” "Reorienting the Sex Talk" is a groundbreaking guide that redefines how we approach conversations about sex. Kathie McCarthy invites us to move beyond the traditional, often uncomfortable methods and embrace a more holistic, pleasure-positive perspective. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in the education and upbringing of young people.

Reorienting the discussion means:

1. We don't have to start the conversation by talking about genitals and babies.

2. Sex is about pleasure and so much more.

3. We can discuss the uncomfortable cultural norms shaping our behaviors. Leaving out this aspect of the discussion is like teaching someone to fly without explaining aerodynamics.

4. We can (and should) be willing to learn about dating and sexual activity as it is now. We may not like what we hear, but we need to know so that we can offer guidance.

5. We can claim our truths while respecting the truths of our kids.

Kathie's goal with her book is to help you help your kids become wise and wonderful sexual beings.
